F-35 Lightning II

Norway received its first F-35 fighter jet in September 2015. This marked the start for a whole new era for the Norwegian Armed Forces.

In June 2009, the Norwegian Parliament decided that the F-35A Lightning II would succeed today's F-16 fighter jets. Within 2025, Norway will buy 52 new stealth multirole fighters. The American company Lockheed Martin builds and delivers the new jets.

338 Squadron at Ørland in central Norway, will be home base for the new mulitrole fighters. A flight simulator squadron will also be established at Ørland Air Base.

Timeline

  • Autumn 2015: Lockheed Martin delivers the first Norwegian F-35s.

  • May–July 2017: Three more aircraft are delivered to Norway.
  • Autumn 2017: Another three jets are delivered. Norway has now received 10 of its 52 new fighter jets.
