Commander Strømmen has served in the Royal Norwegian Navy since 1997. Since 2016 he has been a senior lecturer and researcher in naval operations at the Royal Norwegian Naval Academy (RNoNA). He is a graduate from the RNoNA and has concluded a wide variety of Norwegian, UK and US courses in naval operations, operational planning, and naval tactics. Strømmen holds a MA in history from the University of Bergen and has from September 2019 been working on his PhD in seapower theory.
Strømmen has 15 years of operational experience; serving on missile torpedo boats, frigates, and in NATOs standing maritime group one (SNMG1) as staff communications officer and senior battle watch captain. His last position before joining RNoNA was as N3 in the Norwegian Navy for 3 years.
