Eastern African Stand-By Force

In 2008, the Nordic Ministers of Defence decided to enter into a cooperation concerning capacity building. The support was to be channeled through the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA), which is a part of the African Union (AU).

Priority was given to East Africa and the Eastern African Stand-By Force (EASF). The purpose of capacity building is to support African partners in establishing needed defence capacities.

An essential part of the Nordic cooperation in Eastern Africa has been support to EASF, and since 2009 a Nordic military advisor group has been located together with the EASF headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya.

NODEFIC and the other Nordic training centers have since 2011 run courses in the region. NODEFIC ran the first United Nations Logistics Course at the EASF Logistic Base in Addis Ababa in Ethiopia in 2012. NODEFIC has since then conducted courses in East Africa approximately once a year in the field of logistics, movement control and contingent owned equipment.

In addition, officers and civilians from the region attend courses as Akershus Fortress in Oslo Norway. Some of these participants have later become instructors on the courses conducted in the region. NODEFIC staff members have also been as advisers and facilitators in military exercises conducted by EASF.

The goal of the capacity building is that the EASF countries will be able to run future courses on their own.
