The U.S. commitment to Norway is symbolic of the U.S. commitment to NATO. Failing to meet the challenge in the North would mean the loss of the U.S. voice in shaping European security and consequently a lost opportunity to ensure U.S. security.

Major Victor Bird is 1981 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point. As a U.S. Army Foreign Area Officer, Bird holds a Western European Certificate and Masters in International Affairs from Columbia University. Bird’s regional studies culminated in a fellowship at The Norwegian Institute for Defence Studies. Currently, Bird is attending the U.S. Army’s Command and General Staff College.
