We do this through an analysis of the establishment of a Veterans Day in Norway, instituted on May 8, the traditional Liberation Day in memory of World War 2. We document how this merger has transformed May 8 from a low-key war commemoration to a celebration of the Armed Forces. Through our study, we emphasize how authorities attempt to form new mnemonic practices to give meaning to recent wars. These practices were informed by transnational events, but also constrained by deeply embedded national genres of commemoration. In Norway, the Liberation and Veterans Day has become a secluded event, attended by political and military leaders, but largely ignored by the public. We argue that commemorative practices that fail to resonate with shared experiences in society and are at odds with national identities will have limited appeal and support.

Go to: Sage Journals

Samtidig undersøker utvalget i liten grad hvordan den norske militærmakten faktisk ble anvendt og hvilken effekt den kan ha hatt på den afghanske befolkningen. Saxi, Håkon Lunde. 2018. "Norwegian Perspectives on Baltic Sea Security" In Strategic Challenges in the Baltic Region: Russia, Deterrence, and Reassurance, Edited by Ann-Sofie DahlSaxi, Håkon Lunde. 2018. "Norwegian Perspectives on Baltic Sea Security" In Strategic Challenges in the Baltic Region: Russia, Deterrence, and Reassurance, Edited by Ann-Sofie Dahl
How should the countries in the Baltic Sea region and their allies meet the strategic challenges posed by an openly aggressive and expansionist Russia? NATO and the nonaligned states in the region are now more concerned about an external threat than they have been since the end of the Cold War. Russia has been probing air space, maritime boundaries, and even land borders from the Baltic republics to Sweden. Russia's undermining of Ukraine and annexation of Crimea worries former Soviet republics with Russian minority populations, nonaligned Sweden and Finland are enhancing their cooperation with NATO, and the Trump presidency has created some doubt about America's willingness to follow through on NATO's collective defense commitment.

Go to Georgetown University Press.

Gustavsen, Elin. 2017. "The Privatized Meaning of Wartime Deployments: Examining the Narratives of Norwegian Military Spouses". Ethos, online 5 DecemberGustavsen, Elin. 2017. "The Privatized Meaning of Wartime Deployments: Examining the Narratives of Norwegian Military Spouses". Ethos, online 5 December
<span style="color:#333333;font-family:"open sans", arial, helvetica, "lucida sans unicode", sans-serif;font-size:16px;background-color:#f9f9f9;">This study examines the narratives of eight female spouses of Norwegian veterans of the war in Afghanistan. The narratives are approached as rich cultural texts that arise in the interface between their individual experiences and the sociocultural milieu.

<span style="color:#333333;font-family:"open sans", arial, helvetica, "lucida sans unicode", sans-serif;font-size:16px;background-color:#f9f9f9;">The analysis focuses on the use of “normalization” and “agency” as narrative resources used by the women to organize experience and transform it into meaning. In their accounts, the deployment was not framed as a negative and interruptive event. Nor was it connected to a national narrative of collective meaning. Instead, the spouses conveyed a normalized interpretation in which the meaning of their husbands’ deployment was constructed in close reference to the personal realm of family life.

<span style="color:#333333;font-family:"open sans", arial, helvetica, "lucida sans unicode", sans-serif;font-size:16px;background-color:#f9f9f9;">This article argues that the experience of contemporary warfare has become a marginalized and unsettled experience in Norwegian society. In the absence of a settled repertoire of cultural scripts to portray the experience of having a spouse deployed abroad, the Norwegian military spouses used a privatized framework to interpret their wartime experience.

<span style="color:#333333;font-family:"open sans", arial, helvetica, "lucida sans unicode", sans-serif;font-size:16px;background-color:#f9f9f9;">To download the article, go to the homepage of AnthroSource/Ethos: Journal of the Society for Psychological Anthropology. (restricted access)

Rongved, Gjermund Forfang. 2017. "The Gold War: the dissolution of the Scandinavian Currency Union during the First World War". Scandinavian Economic History Review. Online 21 AugustRongved, Gjermund Forfang. 2017. "The Gold War: the dissolution of the Scandinavian Currency Union during the First World War". Scandinavian Economic History Review. Online 21 August
<span style="color:#333333;font-family:"open sans", sans-serif;font-size:17.6px;">This article explains how the outbreak of the First World War resulted in the de facto dissolution of the Scandinavian Currency Union. Up until the First World War, the union among the central banks of Denmark, Norway and Sweden is considered to be a success. However, the outbreak of war brought cooperation to its knees.

<span style="color:#333333;font-family:"open sans", sans-serif;font-size:17.6px;">The article rejects two conventional perspectives on the break-up of the union.

<span style="color:#333333;font-family:"open sans", sans-serif;font-size:17.6px;">Firstly, that Denmark's and Norway's greater monetary expansion was pivotal to the break-up, whilst Sweden pursued a more prudent monetary policy. In contrast, the article argues that the disintegration of the union is better understood by the implementation of a unilateral Swedish gold blockade policy, influenced by Swedish economic theorists.

<span style="color:#333333;font-family:"open sans", sans-serif;font-size:17.6px;">Secondly, that Sweden in April 1917 finally solved her problem of continued gold inflows by threatening to withdraw from the union. Quite conversely, it is argued that Swedish the Riksbank<span style="color:#333333;font-family:"open sans", sans-serif;font-size:17.6px;"> had to give up her hard line, because Norwegian Norges Bank<span style="color:#333333;font-family:"open sans", sans-serif;font-size:17.6px;"> throughout 1917 forced through gold shipments to pay for Norway's trade deficit, which resulted in a virtual Gold War between the two countries.

<span style="color:#333333;font-family:"open sans", sans-serif;font-size:17.6px;">The scramble for resources saw cordiality being replaced by distrust, whilst national needs overrode any hope of cooperation.

To read the full article, go to the Scandinavian Economic History Review (restricted):

Bogen, Olav and Magnus Håkenstad. 2016. "Reluctant reformers: the economic roots of military change in Norway, 1990–2015". Defence Studies. Online 16 NovemberBogen, Olav and Magnus Håkenstad. 2016. "Reluctant reformers: the economic roots of military change in Norway, 1990–2015". Defence Studies. Online 16 November
The Norwegian Armed Forces has seen extensive reforms since the early 1990s. It has been changed from a large, conscription-based, reservist-dominated territorial Defense force to a smaller, more proficient, and flexible force. However, this process has been far from linear, and to this day the Norwegian Armed Forces retains significant elements of its organizational and cultural cold war heritage.

We argue that national security concerns, domestic politics and financial constraints have played the main role in shaping the reform of the Armed Forces. This argument gives an alternative to explanations offered by previous research, which has tended to emphasize the role played by international influences, such as the NATO operations in the Balkans and Afghanistan, as well as NATO and US reform initiatives.

While external factors undoubtedly have shaped the direction and tempo of the reforms, our findings point to long-standing structural and financial imbalances as the key explanation of the current structure of the Norwegian Armed Forces.

Go to Taylor & Francis' website to read the full article
