(b. 1943) is a graduate of the Norwegian Naval Academy 1967, the
Norwegian Naval Staff College 1982, and the Nato Defence College 1991.
MSc in Operation Research, US Naval Postgraduate School 1978. He has
mainly served on corvettes and frigates and has commanded corvettes and
the training squadron of the Norwegian Navy. Gjelsten has published
widely on naval, defence and national security issues. Particularly, he
has written on the use of naval power, naval doctrine and strategy,
Norwegian defence-planning and security policy.
Current project: To upgrade the study Fremmede ubåter i norske fjorder. Realitet eller myte? [Unknown submarines in Norwegian Fjords. Reality or Myth?] , Oslo Files , 1 /2013. The purpose of the project is to publish the updated version in English.
