Hallvard Notaker
Hallvard Notaker (b. 1976) has a Ph.D. in History from the University of Oslo (2008). Since 2022 he is a Professor of Modern History at the Norwegian Institute for Defence Studies (IFS).
Notaker is associated with the IFS research programme Norwegian Security Policy in Strategic Perspective, where his research focuses on the management of threats below the threshold of war.
He is the author of several books on Norwegian and American history, mainly focusing on political life and institutions. His most recent book on the Norwegian Labour Party and the 22 July 2011 terror attacks made the national shortlist for the Kritikerprisen and Brageprisen awards.
From 2004 to 2019 Notaker held various positions and fellowships with the Department of Archaeology, Conservation and History at the University of Oslo. He was associate professor of Norwegian Contemporary Political History (20%) 2015–2019. In 2005 he was Visiting Fellow at the Contemporary History Institute, Ohio University. He joined the Norwegian Institute for Defence Studies in 2019 and assumed his current position in 2022.
