
Hanne Eggen Røislien
Hanne Eggen Røislien is a researcher and advisor in military culture and cultural development. In her work in the Norwegian Armed Forces, she focuses on the role of culture in mission solving and community development in military institutions. Since 1 October 2024, she has been associated with the Department for Military Leadership at the Staff Defence College, a position she transitioned to from the Defense Staff (FST), where she was Special Adviser in Culture.
She is the author of the "Cultural handbook: an introduction to culture for the armed forces' employees" and "Roadmap for cultural development in the Armed Forces", written in collaboration with the Armed Forces' Chief Sergeant Rune Wenneberg and distributed to all employees of the Armed Forces.
Hanne has a doctorate degree in religious history from NTNU, where she explored culture, meaning and mastery in the Israeli defense force, the IDF. She has an MA degree in the history of religion about the link between culture, meaning and violence among outlying Jewish settlers in the occupied territories.
Hanne has broad international experience, particularly from the Middle East and the USA. She has been associated with, for example, the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington DC and the US Naval War College in Newport. Her research is qualitative and close to the military practitioners.
Hanne has been in the Norwegian Armed Forces since 2014, and came to FST from Cyber Defence, where she was the prime mover in the cultural development project "KULT 2020", which looked more closely at organizational culture, professional culture and mission solving in Cyber Defence.
Hanne is an author, and has recently published the book "Everything is lost: Israeli soldiers tell". She is also a widely used commentator in the Norwegian press on matters relating to the Middle East, and a writer in e.g. Morgenbladet.
