Bjørn Wangensteen

Wangensteen is an associate professor at the Section for Engineering and Technology at the Norwegian Military Academy/Norwegian Defence University College where he teaches and researches in the field of military geomatics (MilGeo), with a special interest in earth observation, satellite remote sensing and geographical analysis with a focus on polar and alpine areas. 

Wangensteen has a background in geomatics and physical geography with a doctorate (Dr.Scient) in geomatics/physical geography from the University of Oslo (2006) and a master's degree in geomatics/ physical geography from the University of Oslo (1999). During the work on his doctorate, Wangensteen had a research stay at the University of Zurich in Switzerland. Both the doctorate and master's thesis are in the field of remote sensing and analysis of mass movements, erosion and changes in polar and alpine areas in Norway, Svalbard and Iceland. 

Wangensteen has been employed at the Norwegian Defense Academy since 2023 and has previously worked at TerraTec AS with data from airborne sensors, Norwegian Computing Center with research in earth observation and snow cover mapping, at the engineering education at the University College of Oslo and Akershus (now Oslo MET) with teaching in geomatics and as head of department, as well as at the Norwegian Space Agency with earth observation and as delegate to working groups in ESA (European Space Agency).
