Deploying to Asia: The Norwegian Navy and CSG25

Political and military developments in Asia are increasingly affecting Europe and Norway. The Norwegian Institute for Defence Studies (IFS) invites you to a breakfast seminar on Norway's contribution to the British-led deployment of a carrier strike group to the Indo-Pacific in 2025.

Rear Admiral Oliver Berdal, Chief of the Royal Norwegian Navy, will open the seminar with remarks on the operational and military rationale behind the deployment before a Q&A session with Professor Øystein Tunsjø (IFS).

The discussion will continue with a panel moderated by Dr Ian Bowers (IFS).
Captain Kevin Rowlands of the Royal Navy will offer a British perspective and discuss combined operational efforts.

Professor Alessio Patalano from King's College London will provide insights on the operation within the broader context of Indo-Pacific security and Asia-Europe relations.

Dr Wrenn Yennie Lindgren, senior research fellow at NUPI, will present Japan's perspective – a key Indo-Pacific partner for the UK, Norway, and NATO.

Finally, retired Vice Admiral Louise Dedichen will offer a NATO perspective on European deployments to the Indo-Pacific. 

The seminar will not be streamed.

Bio

  1. Head of the Royal Navy Strategic Studies Centre, the Royal Navy’s internal think tank which serves to strengthen the conceptual component of the Navy’s fighting power. He is also a Visiting Professor at King’s College London, a Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Plymouth, and the Associate Director of the Council on Geostrategy’s Sea Power Laboratory. 

  2. Senior Research Fellow and Head of Center for Asian Research at the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI), as well as an Associate Research Fellow at the Swedish Institute of International Affairs (UI). Her main area of expertise includes international relations in East Asia and the Indo-Pacific, the politics and foreign policy of Japan, security issues in the Asia-Pacific, and Asia-Arctic diplomacy. 

  3. Professor of War & Strategy in East Asia at the Department of War Studies (DWS), King’s College London (KCL) where he specialises in maritime strategy and doctrine, Japanese military history and strategy, East Asian security, and British defence policy towards the Indo-Pacific. Prof Patalano is the Director of the King’s Japan Programme and the newly established Indo-Pacific Programme at the Centre for Grand Strategy.
